Clinical analysis of tsutsugamushi disease in childhood

Abstract
Tsutsugamushi disease is an acute febrile disease which is characterized by fever, lymphadenopathy, headache, rashes and eschar. The age incidence of reported cases is older than 20 years old. The prominent physical finding of diagnostic dues is eschar.
We reviewed 7 cases of tsutsugamushi disease in childhood who were admitted to Wonkwang university hospital from October to November 1990.
The clinical data were summarized as follows ;
1) Age distribution was between 2 year-old and 14 year-old: The sex of all cases was male.
2) Geographically, 6 cases are in rural habitation.
3) The chief complaints were fever and chill (100 % ), and the commonest sign was rash (100 % ).
4) The antibody titers to all 3 prototype were 1 : 64 in 4 cases, 1 : 128 in 2 cases, and Gilliam type was 1:64 only in 1 case.
5) Laboratory findings showed leukncytosis in 1 case (14 % ), elevated aspartate amih?otransferase (AST) in 5 cases (70 % ), elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in 3 cases (43 % ). Urinalysis showed normal findings. The Chest X-ray revealed increased interstitial marking in 2 cases (28 %).
6) All cases were treated with doxycyclin and mean defervescent period was 1.3 days.
